Interview with Photographer TJ Vissing the Newest Artist in Residence at Esoteric Brewing

We’re excited to celebrate TJ Vissing, an OMS partner and  photographer as the newest Artist in Residence at Esoteric Brewing in Cincinnati. His latest series, soon to be on display in the brewery’s taproom, offers a quiet, powerful look at the landscapes and moments that shape how we see the world. We caught up with TJ ahead of the Opening Night on Friday, November 7th at 7 PM to talk about his creative process and what this show means to him.

Q: You’ve spent more than three decades behind the camera. What keeps you inspired?

TJ: I’ve always been drawn to simplicity. Like the way light hits a surface, or how something can completely change when viewed from a different angle. For me, photography isn’t just about the technical elements, though there are many to consider while shooting. It’s about slowing down enough to notice the small things – maybe even the unnoticed. It’s less about the shot itself and more about the act of seeing. I’m inspired by the world around me. By its enormity, and by knowing there will always be something new to discover.

Q: What can people expect from your Artist in Residence collection at Esoteric?TJ: This body of work focuses on stillness and space. Quiet landscapes that invite people to pause. I want the images to feel like pausing and taking a breath. Hopefully it’s something that gives you a moment of calm and brings you somewhere else entirely.

Q: Why Esoteric Brewing?
TJ: Esoteric has this beautiful blend of creativity and community. It’s a place where people come together to connect, which is exactly what I hope my work does. Sharing photography in a space like that, where people can enjoy it over a great beer, just felt right.

Q: Any advice for aspiring photographers?

 TJ: Travel to new places, whenever you can. Don’t overthink it. Just keep shooting. The best way to develop your eye is to stay curious and keep creating – even when no one’s watching.
