Hudsonville Ice Cream.
Bars Built for
the Freezer Aisle.

When Hudsonville Ice Cream redesigned its ice cream bar boxes, the product photography had to do the selling from behind a freezer door. OMS photographed the bars featured on the new packaging, and our in-house retouching team built the flavor cues and composited every frame into package-ready art.

01 The Brief

A packaging refresh that needed the product to lead.

Hudsonville Ice Cream has been a Michigan family favorite since 1926, built on real cream and time-tested recipes. As the brand rolled out new boxes for its ice cream bar line, it needed hero imagery for five flavors: Brownie Batter Cookie Dough, Salted Caramel, Traverse City Cherry Fudge, Super Scoop, and Fruit Smoothie. Each one had to be instantly recognizable and impossible to pass up.

On a box, the bar is the hero. The image has to show what is inside at a glance, read clearly from several feet away, and look just as good printed large as it does on a product listing online.

02 The Approach

One bite, five flavors, one family on shelf.

Ice cream is one of the most demanding subjects in food photography. Coatings bloom, edges soften, and a perfect bar has a working window measured in seconds. Photographer TJ Vissing prepped and lit each setup in advance so every bar went straight from the freezer to the set at its peak.

Each bar was shot from the same overhead angle with a single bite taken from the top corner, revealing what is inside: the caramel ribbon under a milk chocolate shell, the cherry and fudge pieces in amaretto ice cream, the Black Cherry, Blue Moon, and Vanilla swirl of Super Scoop. Matching the angle and light across all five flavors lets the lineup read as one family in the freezer case.

03 Retouching & Compositing

Where the shoot became packaging.

Much of what makes these boxes work happened after the shutter. The OMS retouching team created the flavor cues for every SKU, the visual shorthand that tells shoppers what they are getting before they read a word: brownie chunks and cookie dough, a sweep of salted caramel with flaked salt, Michigan cherries and fudge, and fresh strawberry, orange, and mango for the sherbet bars.

Our retouchers then composited each bar with its flavor cues, refined every surface, and balanced color across the full lineup, delivering final art that dropped straight into the package design and was ready for print.

04 The Result

Packaging that looks as good as it tastes.

The final images anchor the front of all five of Hudsonville's new ice cream bar boxes, giving shoppers a clear, craveable look at every flavor. Because each bar was photographed and finished to the same standard, the brand also has a consistent image library to carry into eCommerce listings, retailer programs, and social.
